Fat women are rarely featured in the media in a positive light. Not seeing representations of ourselves subtly delegitimizes our bodies.
One of the most healing parts of my journey has been finding art that honors fat women, including all of their pudge, rolls, lumps, and stretch marks.
I find body positive art more powerful than the typical selfies you see on Instagram (which, don’t get me wrong, I also love). I think it’s because art requires a serious time investment, and also has more longevity. Together these traits contribute to the idea of the subject of the art being worthy.
These are my favorites for many reasons, but above all because they tend towards realism — realistic waist-to-hip ratio, realistic bellies and realistic lumps. I hope that you’ll be inspired to follow a few (or all) to get some additional images of fat women in your life.
